Adelaide United Head Coach Theo Tsiounis reflected on a disciplined and composed performance after the Reds recorded a 0–0 draw away to Sydney FC on Friday night, extending the side’s run to back-to-back clean sheets and a third consecutive game without loss.
Tsiounis on the overall performance:
I thought we started the game really well, particularly given the challenging pitch conditions. We’re committed to continuing to develop the technical ability of our players, and we’re starting to see the benefits of that with how comfortable they are on the ball. There were some strong passages both in and out of possession where we controlled the game well. It felt like the type of match where the first goal would have opened things up. While we got into some really good areas and created strong opportunities, unfortunately we weren’t able to capitalise on them.
Tsiounis on back-to-back clean sheets:
Clean sheets are highly valued within our group. Defensively, we want to continue building on this and make sure we’re a team that’s very difficult for opponents to play through. It’s definitely a strong platform for us to keep building from.
Tsiounis on managing momentum across the match:
Sydney lifted later in the second half, particularly when Tanner came on, and she caused us some problems. They also defended with real desperation, which made it difficult to find space in and around the box. An early goal would certainly have helped break the game open, but credit to Sydney for how they responded and defended.
Tsiounis on key moments and decisions:
We always talk about focusing on what we can control. The referee is in the best position to make those decisions in real time. From my perspective, I felt Erin used her body well to create an advantage in the box, and with the late corner it was very difficult to determine from my angle whether the ball crossed the line. The key takeaway for us is to keep getting the ball into those dangerous areas. That’s always our focus.
Tsiounis on Ilona’s performance:
Once again, Ilona delivered a solid performance. She plays with maturity and a strong presence. There are areas she’ll continue to grow in, but the game time and decision-making moments she’s getting will only help her development.
Tsiounis on Adriana Taranto’s impact:
Adriana has been immense for us over the last couple of games. It’s been great to see her take the game on and get forward with real purpose. I see her going from strength to strength. She’s settled into Adelaide really well and is enjoying her time at the club.
