Tsiounis embraces ‘mouthwatering’ Wellington test as Reds chase home final

Adelaide United Ninja A-League Head Coach Theo Tsiounis says the Reds are taking plenty of positives into Friday’s clash with Wellington Phoenix, with a home final on the line.

With Finals already secured for only the third time in the Club’s history, Tsiounis believes the group’s mindset, depth and growing winning culture will be crucial against a Wellington side he expects to be organised, resilient and difficult to break down under Head Coach Bev Priestman.

Tsiounis on the mood in camp and potential inclusions
“It’s been really positive. Despite a challenging game against Newcastle, we were still able to take a number of positives from the performance. Securing a finals position for only the third time in the club’s history is a significant achievement and something we want to build into our culture. We’re expecting to welcome a few players back this week, with others continuing to progress well.”

Tsiounis on Sian Dewey and Erin Healy
“Sian has unfortunately picked up some minor damage to her knee. Erin is progressing well and isn’t far from returning to play.”

Tsiounis on Claudia Jenkins stepping back in
“We’re fortunate to have a couple of strong goalkeepers who continue to push each other. There were no surprises with Claudia’s performance. She’s a hardworking and consistent performer, and she showed that on the weekend, particularly with that triple save.”

Tsiounis on what he learned from last week’s performance
“Having to make significant changes to the team always presents challenges. However, the group showed real resolve and continued to push to get something out of the game. It was also fantastic to see Lara Gooch get 90 minutes and Maeve Nicholas make her senior debut.”

Tsiounis on the hunger to finish strongly and push for a home final
“We’re all really excited. The group understands that historically this isn’t something that’s happened often, and it ties into the culture and winning mentality we’re trying to build. We’ve created a number of ‘firsts’ this season, and there’s an opportunity to keep building on that. We also know finals football is another level, and we need to be ready for whoever we face.”

Tsiounis on Bev Priestman’s impact and the Wellington challenge
“She’s done an exceptional job — firstly in constructing a strong squad, and then in building a team that is difficult to break down and very effective in this league. I’m looking forward to a competitive game, with both teams having the opportunity to finish in the highest position in their club’s history.”
