Auckland FC wins its first A-League Championship in a historic Grand Final win on home soil over Sydney FC 1-0.
What a night. Auckland FC crowned A-League champions in front of a packed-out Go Media in what will go down as a historic night of football in this country.
Cam Howeison the difference as his 60th-minute strike edged Auckland over the line as the game finished 1-0.
It was a cagey first half at Go Media, with chances being few and far between for both sides as we headed into half-time without a goal.
Auckland had a few penalty shouts in the match go begging and will feel hard done by not having one given.
Going the other way, referee Alex King wasn’t shy about showing the Black Knights yellow cards, racking up five before the 60-minute mark.
Hometown hero Cameron Howeison opened the scoring right in front of the port with a deflected effort that sailed over Devenish Meares, sending The Port into raptures.
The 60th-minute goal was Howeison’s first-ever goal for Auckland FC, and what a time to score it.
With ten to go, Jesse Randall almost left Auckland with a brilliant parting gift but failed to convert the glorious opportunity.
After 5 minutes of added time, the referee’s whistle is met with a roar like no other as Auckland becomes a city of champions.
