Over and above the many player accolades, two more extremely important Awards were handed out at Wynnum Wolves’ 2026 Awards Night and 105 Anniversary Celebrations at Sirromet over the weekend.
These were the JACK HUTCHINSON MEMORIAL PRESIDENT’S AWARD and the TERRY AND TONY FURPHY CLUB MEMBER OF THE YEAR AWARD which both recognise outstanding service to our wonderful community football club.
Named in honour of the founder of Wynnum club 105 years ago, this year’s JACK HUTCHINSON MEMORIAL PRESIDENT’S AWARD went to longstanding Wynnum volunteer, Phillip Engstrom who notched up his 20th consecutive year of service to the club – including 19 consecutive years on the Wolves’ committee.
Phil has been a tireless contributor to Wynnum Wolves over the past 20 years and is one of the club’s cherished Life Members. As both a committee member and a coach he has been a mainstay at the club through both good times and bad, with his dedication and service to Wolves never wavering throughout those 20 years.
Phil still coaches the club’s Metro 1 men’s team, working with many young men he has seen come through the club’s Metro Junior and Academy ranks over the years.

Also recognised on the night was committee member and Wolves’ MiniRoos Co-Ordinator, Grant McCoy, who has notched up his fifth consecutive year with the club, and his second our MiniRoos Co-ordinator.
Grant was named the winner of the 2026 TERRY and TONY FURPHY CLUB MEMBER of the YEAR AWARD which was presented on the night by their daughter Carol.
With a record number of 50 MiniRoos and Pathways teams at Wynnum in 2026 – some 500 young players under the age of 12 – Grant oversees the largest cohort of the club, all as a volunteer. It’s a tough gig but one he does with wholehearted enthusiasm and passion. Wolves’ MiniRoos space has never been in better hands.
When not fielding emails and phone calls from MiniRoos coaches, managers and parents he also works tirelessly around the club grounds as a Mr Fix-it and organiser extraordinaire and still finds time to serve on the committee and coach his son’s U13 Metro Team.
Volunteers such a Grant are vital links in strengthen the fabric of community football clubs and everyone at Wynnum Wolves truly appreciates what he brings to our Pack.
