ALW Match Wrap: Phonsongkham “Olimpico” seals battling win over Phoenix

The visitors dominated for long periods, but the Glory defence and goalkeeper Teresa Morrissey stood firm to keep them at bay, before substitute Phonsongkham struck 15 minutes from time to secure the points.

The victory, their second of the season, lifts Stephen Peters’ side to within one point of the top six ahead of another home game against Adelaide United next weekend.

Clear-cut chances were very much at a premium during a first half which saw Wellington pose the greater attacking threat for long periods.

Morrissey, making her Glory debut in goal, was not called upon to make any notable saves, but she did have to punch away several corners while under severe pressure from a physically imposing Phoenix side.

And when the home ‘keeper was beaten 24 minutes in, Marisa Van Der Meer’s header from a Manaia Elliott cross cannoned back out off the inside of the post.

Wellington continued to press forward after the break, with Morrissey forced to go full length in order to tip over a strike from Lara Wall and then keeping out an effort from Sabitra Bhandari, much to the disappointment of the sizeable and voluble Nepalese contingent in the crowd.

Elliott flashed a shot across the face of goal moments later and it seemed as if Phoenix were edging towards a breakthrough, but instead it came at the other end.

Phonsongkham’s inswinging corner from the left eluded Victoria Esson in the Wellington goal and looked to have drifted across the line before Bronte Trew helped it into the net to make sure.

Phoenix tried desperately to grab something out of the game in the latter stages, but Glory remained as resolute as they had throughout and held on to lock in a brave and much-needed victory.
