A quick turnaround awaits Melbourne City as we return to Isuzu UTE A-League action on Tuesday night for another pre-Christmas clash at AAMI Park.
City will take on Macarthur FC for the first time this season in the second leg of a festive football home doubleheader, with Aurelio Vidmar’s side eager to finish the year strongly in front of home support.
With little time to dwell on the weekend just gone, the focus has quickly shifted to recovery and response as City look to bounce back under the lights on Tuesday. Here are all the key talking points ahead of the clash:
Reset and recover
City come into the midweek fixture off the back of a disappointing Christmas Derby result, where despite producing plenty of positive football and creating the better of the chances across the 90 minutes, a late Melbourne Victory goal proved decisive.
While the manner of the loss stung, the opportunity to respond comes almost immediately, and Vidmar’s side will be determined to channel that frustration into a strong performance against Macarthur.
Short turnarounds have become something of a theme for City this season, largely due to our AFC Champions League Elite commitments, and the squad has grown accustomed to managing recovery while preparing for the next challenge.
That experience will again be crucial as we take the pitch for the second time in four days. Tuesday night also marks the second match in a run of seven consecutive home fixtures, and we’ll be eager to reassert ourselves at AAMI Park as we build towards a busy Christmas and New Year period.
Running with the Bulls
Tuesday night will be our first meeting with Macarthur this season, with the two sides having split their encounters last campaign. Both teams claimed home wins in 2024/25, with City’s most recent meeting against the Bulls at AAMI Park ending in a convincing 2-0 victory, highlighted by Max Caputo’s first professional double.

Macarthur arrive in Melbourne familiar with the demands of a short turnaround themselves, balancing domestic football alongside continental commitments in the AFC Champions League Two.
Their league form has fluctuated so far this season, recording three wins, two draws and three losses, but they will take confidence from a dramatic come-from-behind 2-1 win over Brisbane Roar on the weekend.
Harry Sawyer was the hero in that match, converting two penalties to secure the points. City will be well aware of the challenge the Bulls present and will be focused on producing a disciplined and assertive performance on home turf.
Familiar faces return
Tuesday night will also see a couple of familiar faces return to AAMI Park in opposition colours. Championship winners Callum Talbot and Harry Politidis will both line up for Macarthur, having played roles in City’s title-winning campaign last season.

Talbot made 85 appearances in City blue, while Politidis, a City Academy graduate, featured 39 times for the first team.
While there will be warm receptions off the pitch, City’s focus will firmly remain on the task at hand as we look to produce a positive result and return to winning ways.
