Tsiounis: “We’re close – now it’s about turning performances into outcomes”

Adelaide United Women’s Head Coach Theo Tsiounis says his side is focused on adding “conviction and purpose” in the final third as the Reds prepare to face Western Sydney Wanderers on Saturday.

Speaking ahead of the match to United Media, Tsiounis reflected on the group’s resilience through a challenging period and believes the foundations are in place for a strong response at home.

Tsiounis on the group’s mindset heading into the match
“It was nice to have a short break with family and loved ones, and I think the players benefited from that as well. A few travelled to spend time with family, which helped freshen everyone up heading into the weekend. Now the focus is fully back on football and preparing the right way for Saturday.”

Tsiounis on the response Reds fans can expect against WSW
“In every game we’ve played, we’ve been right in the contest. Perth was frustrating because we were very close. Now it’s about bringing a similar approach, but with more conviction and purpose in the final third. That’s been a big focus this week, and hopefully we can see that come to life on the weekend.”

Tsiounis on positives taken from the Perth performance
“There’s been significant growth in the group’s technical ability, which has been really pleasing. We’re also working on being more flexible in how we play, particularly around transition moments, which are such a big part of the women’s game. The speed at which we move the ball forward and create opportunities is another area we’re continuing to improve.”

Tsiounis on the group’s resilience through disruption
“I’m really proud of the group. Football is always 11 v 11, and we’re not interested in excuses, but the players have shown real resilience and togetherness through a challenging period. It’s a strong group, and I genuinely believe that if we keep pushing forward collectively, things will turn. It doesn’t take much in this league for momentum to shift.”
