Vergos: No secret to Victory striker’s form

Melbourne Victory’s Nikos Vergos says hard work is the driving force behind his impressive form in front of goal.

The Greek striker ended 2025 in fine fettle, backing up the brace he hit to beat Adelaide United with a maiden Isuzu UTE A-League hat-trick in the 5-1 thumping of Wellington Phoenix on Monday night.

Vergos’ treble launched him up the competition’s scoring charts, putting him joint-first in this season’s Golden Boot race alongside Macarthur’s Harrison Sawyer.

On Friday, January 2, kick-off 7:35pm AEDT, the target is a first goal versus Perth, an opponent against whom he has a 100% winning record, including October’s 0-2 success at HBF Park.

Speaking during his pre-match press conference, Vergos outlined how his consistent approach to training and matches has delivered in recent games.

“It’s better when you work hard, and you don’t stop doing what you are used to doing, and finally, you see the result come. I didn’t do something special, I continued to do the same things, and finally, the result came, and that’s why I’m very happy.

“I have to continue like this, because in the end, we are just in Round 10, and we are in the middle of the table, and we didn’t achieve nothing. It’s not the time to celebrate. We have to be happy with what we did in the past few weeks, but on the other hand, we didn’t achieve nothing yet, so we have to continue like this.”

Victory, thanks in no small part to Vergos’ efforts in front of goal, are going for a fourth straight win at AAMI Park in Round 11 as they push to continue their ascent up the ladder.

And the 29-year-old believes an ever-connected dressing room is a key reason behind the current run of results put up by Arthur Diles’ side.

“We find our chemistry on the field, and day by day, we become better, and that’s our target. We are still very early in the season, and have to continue getting better and be ready game by game, to win, to do everything possible.

“There is no limit. You know, every day, you can be better. Just push harder every day, try to be the best version of yourself.”
