Adelaide United fans can look forward to seeing a familiar face in red for longer, with Bart Vriends committing his future to the Club after signing a new one-year contract extension, with a Club option for a further season.
Speaking exclusively with Ten News Adelaide’s Max Burford, the experienced Dutch defender said the decision to stay was both simple and heartfelt – driven by comfort, connection, and belief in what Adelaide United is building.
“I’m obviously excited,” Vriends said. “It was quite an easy decision. We started talking a few weeks ago and came to the conclusion pretty quickly. Everything feels right and good here, and I’m happy to stay for a bit longer.”
Now in his second season with the Reds, Vriends has become a central figure both on and off the pitch. He admits that while moving overseas for the first time came with challenges, Adelaide has quickly become home.
“When things are good and feel comfortable, you should appreciate that,” he said. “I love playing football at Coopers Stadium – from the first game until now. I didn’t want it to end. I’m happy at the Club, happy in the city, and my partner and I have built a good life and social circle here.”
That sense of belonging has translated into strong performances, with the 34-year-old feeling increasingly settled in Australian football.
“This was my first experience abroad,” Vriends explained. “The league and style are different to what I was used to, but I found my feet quickly. This year, I feel very comfortable on and off the pitch, and that helps my performances. I think that also helps the team.”
A key part of Vriends’ role has been providing stability and guidance within a young defensive group – something he takes pride in.
“What we needed was a more solid base and defensive structure,” he said. “I’m trying to play my role in that and also help the younger talents grow. That’s something I’ll keep doing. I still feel like I’m developing as a player myself – you never stop learning.”
Vriends also spoke warmly about his defensive partnership and the emerging next generation at the Club, backing young players to grow through experience.
“Football can be tough sometimes, especially for young players,” he said. “But they’re talented, they’ll learn from difficult moments, and they’ll come back stronger. The future of Adelaide United is bright – the pathway has proven that.”
Currently working through a minor muscle setback, Vriends is eager for a possible return this weekend in Wellington and continue contributing.
“It’s part of football,” he said. “I’m working hard and I’m excited to get going again.”
With his future secured and his belief unwavering, Bart Vriends’ commitment is another sign of stability and progress – a leader choosing to stay and grow with Adelaide United.
