What happened?
The match opened evenly, with both sides battling for control through the early stages.
Green Gully struck first in the 30th minute to hand the hosts a 1-0 advantage, but City responded well as the half progressed and began to settle into the contest.
The equaliser arrived five minutes before the break when Medin Memeti showed great movement inside the box to get on the end of a dangerous ball before calmly slotting home, ensuring the teams went into half time level at 1-1.
City returned after the interval with clear intent, tightening up defensively and regaining control through the middle of the pitch. Strong performances from Angus Mackintosh and Beckham Baker helped City dictate possession, while Jayden Necovski and Ryan Kalms remained composed at the back to limit Green Gully’s attacking opportunities.
The breakthrough came just five minutes into the second half as Memeti produced a moment of real quality. Picking the ball up outside the area, the attacker unleashed a sensational long-range strike that swerved beyond the goalkeeper and into the back of the net to give City the lead.
Momentum continued to build from there as City pressed high and caused problems through quick transitions and sharp link-up play between Memeti, Roland Ballah and Lawrence Wong.
We added a third in the 57th minute following some brilliant team football. Isiah Boston did well in the build-up before Wong delivered a clever assist into the path of Ballah, who finished neatly to extend the advantage.
City continued to control the tempo throughout the final half hour, with the introduction of fresh legs from the bench helping maintain the intensity around the ground.
While Green Gully searched for a way back into the contest, City remained composed defensively and denied the hosts any real opportunities, professionally seeing out an impressive 3-1 victory away from home.
What’s next?
City will look to continue its winning run when we return to action against Dandenong Thunder on Sunday 24 May at Casey Fields, with kick-off set for 3:00pm.
